One year later: (2012) KARE11 Dorm on a Dime

Since the calendar turned to August, and thoughts turn to back-to-school, I've been thinking about the great opportunity we had with KARE11 last August.
The call came, asking 'will you decorate a dorm room on the cheap' for a "Take Care of your Money' segment?'

YES!

Here's the August 21 2012 (one year ago today!) blog post all about it.
Watch the KARE11 feature right here~

Thanks once again, KARE11!

'Dorm on a Dime' with KARE11

The 'after'
We felt like we could move right in after staging this resident hall at the University of Minnesota~
The 'before'
We had great plans, starting with structure.  By using doors - #1 on the end of the twin bed for hanging a mirror---or whatever you like (no nails/screws in the walls...).  The queen headboard along the length of the bed converts it to a sofa/daybed!
The second plan was to use a color pop - with turquoise elements
This stand by the bed was spray painted turquoise, then glazed to tone it down a bit.
We brought in lots of personal touches, wanting to make it feel like home.  When I say 'we' staged the dorm - it was all done with the creative ideas and work by Rachel (my daughter).
On door #2, we mounted a $5 dressing length mirror.
You can see we added hooks to this door for jewelry and more~
Fabric covered lampshade.  Note that contact paper (removable) was applied to the brown laminate desk top.
Simple lighting was added.  Bare lampshade with light kit - hang, eh voila~
Organization was the another important factor.  A painted drawer holds files & more; old bead board cupboard door with clips~
Lots of under-the-bed storage; step stools for the cabinets above the closets.
Personal touches, like latte' cups and flowers~
We did buy one new item to pull all together: this 6x8 cotton rug (Homegoods, $49). Otherwise, new purchases were minimal --- 'secondhand' and 'thrifty' was the idea~
The second bed; floor pillows under
Pair of shutters, sunburst mirror and pillows, pillows~
It wasn't hard to make it all look great - what a wonderful space it was to start with!  It even had a corner sink area.  We added a fabric drape on a tension rod (no sew).
Yes, a room with a view, corner 4th floor room at Comstock Hall.  The Minneapolis skyline and Mississippi River!
Thank you, Resident Life Staff and UofM Media Relations for all you did to make this happen~
Thank you to KARE11's JULIE
And, KARE11's JEFFREY DEMARS.  We appreciate you!
So, did you know you can watch this staging day in action?  Yes!  It airs tonight on KARE11, 10pm news, MONDAY AUGUST 20th.  We'll post their link to the feature tomorrow, too.

What a great opportunity - we had a wonderful time, TERESA
